Handbell Set Bequests and Gifts

HRGB/WHMF are frequently made aware of intended bequests or gifts of handbell sets to the Society.

Whilst appreciating the thoughts behind such bequests, they do present financial and other challenges to the organisation; for example each additional bequest or gift requires insurance and maintenance and the sets have to be stored and transported. Older sets may need significant expenditure on refurbishment before being suitable for use.

Because of this, the Society may have to consider declining bequests unless there is an accompanying monetary bequest.

Large sets of bells present a special problem and the Society may wish to split these into smaller sets. HRGB/WHMF may also wish to sell or donate some of the bells and will seek an arrangement (eg within a deed of gift) under which no limitation is be placed on HRGB about their disposal.

Generally, however the objects of HRGB/WHMF do not include trading in second hand handbells and charitable donation remains the major, and in some years the only source of income.

Members considering such a bequest or gift are encouraged to contact either the Patron of WHMF or the Chair of HRGB to discuss the situation.
